A tragic incident in Canoga Park has left two 10-year-old twin boys and their father dead in what investigators are describing as an apparent murder-suicide at a San Fernando Valley apartment complex.
According to the Los Angeles Police Department, officers responded Sunday evening to reports of a shooting in the 8000 block of Owensmouth Avenue. When they arrived, they found a man believed to be in his mid-40s and his two young sons inside the residence, all suffering from fatal gunshot wounds.
Investigators believe the father shot and killed his twin sons before turning the weapon on himself. Authorities have not yet released the identities of those involved pending notification of family members.
Police said the children’s mother was also inside the home at the time of the incident. She told investigators she heard gunfire and went to check on what was happening when additional shots were fired. Officials say she was not physically injured but was present during parts of the incident and is now cooperating with investigators.
Preliminary reports indicate the shooting occurred during a family gathering at the apartment, reportedly a birthday event for the children’s mother. What began as a routine gathering quickly turned into a deadly and chaotic scene.
At one point, investigators say the father allegedly fired in the direction of the mother but missed. Moments later, he is believed to have taken his own life.
Authorities have not confirmed a motive. Detectives continue to examine all possible factors, including domestic circumstances, mental health concerns, and other issues that may have contributed to the tragedy.
The investigation remains ongoing as police work to establish a clear timeline of events and gather additional evidence from the scene.
